Book Review | Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi

Unravel Me
Author: Tahereh Mafi
Published: February 5, 2013 by HarperCollins
Format: Paperback

Juliette has now found a group of people with gifts like hers with the help of Kenji. At first, she's eager to learn more and explore her capabilities, but as days passed, she slowly doubted herself again, slowly shrinking back to the darkness inside her. The discoveries by The Omega Point about Adam didn't help as it made their relationship much more complicated, add the fact that other than Adam, there's still one person who can touch her. Set right after where Shatter Me has left, Juliette must now choose whose side she's on because the clock is ticking and war is coming.

Tahereh Mafi didn't lose her unique, poetic prose that has left many readers of Shatter Me in awe. The way how she shows what was going on in Juliette’s mind will surely blown the readers away, like how she did on her debut novel.  At first, the readers might get overwhelmed with what's happening on Juliette's mind because of it's flow, but as the story progresses, the readers will get used to it.

The characters were perfectly woven with the plot of the book: Adam’s intense love for Juliette as he continuously tried to make things work between him and Juliette no matter how dangerous it can be. At the same time, Juliette needs to make crucial decisions for the people of Omega Point and for the people she loves so dearly. Unravel Me is the breaking point for Kenji, as he shines throughout the book and that there’s so much more to his raucous soldier that Juliette met in Shatter Me. And then there’s Warner, who was seen in another light, that there’s more to his sadistic and cruel nature, one that he don’t dare to show to others.

In addition, Unravel Me brings to light the inner struggles of the characters, the conflicting feelings that Juliette has for Adam and Warner among other else. At the same time, Mafi was able to flesh out the resistance in just one book, and was able to bring out the much bigger picture of what was happening in this dystopian world: the war that the Omega Point has been preparing for.

Unravel Me is a shattering sequel that will take readers on a roller coaster ride filled with sacrifices, self-realization, and heart-triggering moments between Juliette, Adam and Warner. The readers who loved Shatter Me would no doubt fall in love the second time around with its compelling characters as they prepared for war.
